I think it would be better to buy a Plasma TV instead of a LCD TV because they usually have better picture quality and contrast. Also I don't think having a 1080p TV instead of a 720p matters unless it's bigger than 55 inches. But if you really want a 1080p TV check out this one: www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx

Lith at your first comment about plasmas that was back about five years when plasmas first came out. I raised the same concern when my dad was looking at purchasing one and the manager told me that wasn't so and I looked up the newer specs and lo and behold its true. It will last about as long as an LCD would. If your still looking samsung has some very nice TVs resonably priced.

Well I think I narrowed it down thanks to all of your suggestions. Based on what I've read I still think the Sharp AQUOS I linked to earlier might be a good choice.

For a Plasma I'm thinking www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx and for a DLP I'm thinking www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx (although I'm not sure if I can actually find room for that in my tiny dorm room.) Anybody know anything about LED lighting on DLPs?

Also, just a little note if you want the SpongeBob arcade game please post you want it or post another comment saying you do as I'm presuming not everybody here wants it.

Like Zufoo I don't think burn-in is a problem for new Plasma TVs. However the TECH gurus I know recommend going throug 100-200 hour break in period the first time you get a new plasma TV.

Hi Lith!

I would definitely go with a LCD - Samsungs are good - I have owned mine for over a year now and if I had to buy one today, I would go with a Full HD so that I can enjoy games in 1080p.

Thank you for your offer regarding SpongeBob. I would like to have it as it looks like a fun game :)

I have a Sharp Aquos 37" in my bedroom for one of my 360's... and it's fantastic. Highly recommend it. Great for bright rooms. great for gaming.

My wife and 5 yr old son often use it, if I'm hogging my 360 on my 50" dlp samsung in the living room :)

(The DLP is older, I'd go with either a 50" 1080p plasma or LCD in the living room/main home theater) if I had to replace it today.

Panasonic's 150-inch plasma would probably work well. I don't think it would be too much over kill ;)

Man this has to be one of the hardest questions to answer, I like Samsung myself tho......

For the best picture you want a Pioneer KURO TV, everywhere I've looked people have said it's the best you can get, and looking at CES 2008 Pioneer's next-gen plasmas are continuing the trend, the only down side is the price.

Very old plasmas did have a problem with burn-in and did not have as long a life as LCD, however with modern plasmas it's not a problem unless you go out of your way to show the same picture on screen for days on end and their life span is right up there with LCD's now.

Plasma's offer better blacks, colour and response times over LCD's, however a high-end LCD can beat a low-end plasma.

I've got a LG plasma that's about 3 years old and have not had any problems using it for hours and hours a day gaming (12 hours solid of my sister playing Zelda on the Wii for example).

I've been helping my Mum and Dad pick a new TV the last day or so and they have gone for a Panasonic TX-37LZD70 37" 1080p LCD (www.panasonic.co.uk/.../index.htm) which should be delivered next week for me to have a play with :)

From all the information I read Panasonic gets talked about a lot along side Pioneer in terms of picture.

The only problem with the Panasonic's (UK models anyway) is that they don't all seem to support 1080p via Component connections, which is only a problem if you have a older Xbox 360 without HDMI) as well as not supporting HDMI 1080p 24 FPS modes, only a big deal if you want the best from HD DVD or Blu-ray films, but even with those two problems, from the reviews I read they beat out models for the same sort of price from Sony and the like which were only 720p anyway.

I'm currently saving up for a new TV and am hoping to get Pioneer KURO, but that all depends on how much the price comes down, 720p models are around £1500 now where as 1080p models are £3000!

If you want to keep costs down it seems to be better to go for a higher-end 720p TV over a low-end 1080p, even more so for gaming because of the fast motion and sometimes dark areas in games.

I wish I could comment on the TV, but I haven't had the opportunity to purchase one myself, so I really haven't researched it enough.

I would love the Spongebob game though. I have 18 month old twin girls who can already say Spongebob (as well as Elmo and Barney). I have taught them how to hold a 360 controller properly, although their fingers really don't reach all the buttons. I am trying to raise them right.

@BrakulaGreifi, I really did want to purchase a Plasma due to the inherent advantages of it over LCD but doesn't it gradually dim after a while and can't burn in be a problem (especially burn-in)?

I really appreciate the comments guys, and I've tried asking e before but he's usually too busy (especially now ).

Litheon, I was in the exact same position as you a year ago when I went to buy my TV, I had done the same research, and came to the same conclusion. However, when I went into the store and actually looked at the tvs I completely changed my mind!

I bought a Panasonic Viera 42" plasma, and can't be happier. It's a great choice for a medium budget, does 720p (not 1080), and is more than enough for xbox 360 gaming. I figure I'll likely buy a 1080p tv in about 3 years when all of this crazy is passed.

If you really think you need 1080p, then go for the larger size, otherwise it's not worth it. And if you really want LCD - well, I know heaps of people that are happy with their Bravias, as long as you don't get anything lower than their D series. Otherwise, Samsung seem to be winning everyone over with their quality

Litheon...to tell you the truth I have no clue which TV to buy I just ask one of my best mates who works for a TV company and he tells me which TV he would recommend, my only suggestion is to ask e or Major because they recently bought a HDTV :)

I would absolutely love a copy of the new SpongeBob game to play along with my 4 year old Son. Is it available (yet) in the UK though? I did look a couple of weeks ago and didn't notice it on the new arrivals list. Here's hoping!
