Hello, I've taken the time to write up a few constructive criticisms of the new majornelson.com layout. As a project manager I've overseen the development of many high quality web applications, this is my thanks to you guys for running such an informative blog, please don't be offended by the criticism that follows.
Overall a poor attempt at web 2.0, a lot of things need improving:
- All content needs equal padding.
- Completely remove the right column, people with lower screen resolutions shouldn't be subject to a vertical scrollbar, not everyone has a 1080p monitor!
- TABLES AREN'T FOR LAYOUT! http://xrl.us/kd35, if the majority of users are browsing in; IE6+, firefox or opera there is no excuse for using tables.
- Do not use "justify" text alignment, it makes the comments harder to read and gives an overall messy look.
- Either scrap the gamercard or position it underneath user comments (maybe support the community and use the gamertag signature mygamercard.net generates?).
- The current comment structure will hinder long posts. The comment content should span 100% so in depth comments aren't obscured.
- To much emphasis has been given to the rounded borders. The left navigation content should have square or slightly rounded edges. This will improve readability and the general page flow.
- The hue of a hyper link should always differ from the color it is placed upon.
- Make the banner the same width as the content.
- Change the order of user comments to descending (by comment id), displaying the latest comments at the top of the blog will spark new conversations and hide old ones.
- The join hyper link is broken, thus I couldn't create a user account.
Hopefully this helps with your development process. If you weren't a group of computing specialists this layout would suffice, since this isn't the case you have certain standards you should be meeting!

I use a wide screen monitor, and the 2 side menus work very well for me. The only problem I had is trying to find how to get back to the 2 bars after I decided to see how the site looked without the right bar. The link is hidden at the bottom the page. It should be in the search box for continuity.
On my widescreen the banner looks out of place and just kind of floats there. It needs blending better in to the main page. The problem is the banner was designed for a set size of page (probably the old blog) without knowing how it would work with the new one.
Roboblitz would be pretty darn cool. Awesome stuff you're doing here and at MN dude.

Great article Litheon. Very helpful.
Do you have any suggestions on tuning the machine.config for best performance? The website I am working on at the moment is set up in an environment with two load balanced web servers, one SQL 2005 server (with a warm failover) and one supporting application server which each of the webservers talk to for their session state.
I've never really toyed around with machine.config, although I'm assuming you can put <cache> entries in there. If that's the case make sure you bump the amount of memory the application can use for caching up there, especially if the SQL server is on a separate box. At any given moment on mn.com there are about 3,000 cache entries that total up to about 200 MB.
I've also got our SQL server configured to take up just under 2 GB of RAM. With that configuration and a fair amount of database optimization the CPU on that box never exceeds 20% utilization, ever.
Also, if anyone has anything to add regarding performance please feel free to chime in. I'm always interested in ways to tweak settings so they're just right.

Thanks for the update, Litheon. What would really be nice if Microsoft started shipping the Zune to Canada, the UK and Australia. I'd love to get my hands on one of the new ones, but if the only reason the MP3 player isn't more widespread is because the Zune store is only in English and because of country language laws, as I have read, MS really needs to get their act together. If you happen to have any info on that, it would be greatly appreciated.

Litheon...to tell you the truth I have no clue which TV to buy I just ask one of my best mates who works for a TV company and he tells me which TV he would recommend, my only suggestion is to ask e or Major because they recently bought a HDTV :)
Litheon, I was in the exact same position as you a year ago when I went to buy my TV, I had done the same research, and came to the same conclusion. However, when I went into the store and actually looked at the tvs I completely changed my mind!
I bought a Panasonic Viera 42" plasma, and can't be happier. It's a great choice for a medium budget, does 720p (not 1080), and is more than enough for xbox 360 gaming. I figure I'll likely buy a 1080p tv in about 3 years when all of this crazy is passed.
If you really think you need 1080p, then go for the larger size, otherwise it's not worth it. And if you really want LCD - well, I know heaps of people that are happy with their Bravias, as long as you don't get anything lower than their D series. Otherwise, Samsung seem to be winning everyone over with their quality
@BrakulaGreifi, I really did want to purchase a Plasma due to the inherent advantages of it over LCD but doesn't it gradually dim after a while and can't burn in be a problem (especially burn-in)?

I wish I could comment on the TV, but I haven't had the opportunity to purchase one myself, so I really haven't researched it enough.
I would love the Spongebob game though. I have 18 month old twin girls who can already say Spongebob (as well as Elmo and Barney). I have taught them how to hold a 360 controller properly, although their fingers really don't reach all the buttons. I am trying to raise them right.
For the best picture you want a Pioneer KURO TV, everywhere I've looked people have said it's the best you can get, and looking at CES 2008 Pioneer's next-gen plasmas are continuing the trend, the only down side is the price.
Very old plasmas did have a problem with burn-in and did not have as long a life as LCD, however with modern plasmas it's not a problem unless you go out of your way to show the same picture on screen for days on end and their life span is right up there with LCD's now.
Plasma's offer better blacks, colour and response times over LCD's, however a high-end LCD can beat a low-end plasma.
I've got a LG plasma that's about 3 years old and have not had any problems using it for hours and hours a day gaming (12 hours solid of my sister playing Zelda on the Wii for example).
I've been helping my Mum and Dad pick a new TV the last day or so and they have gone for a Panasonic TX-37LZD70 37" 1080p LCD (www.panasonic.co.uk/.../index.htm) which should be delivered next week for me to have a play with :)
From all the information I read Panasonic gets talked about a lot along side Pioneer in terms of picture.
The only problem with the Panasonic's (UK models anyway) is that they don't all seem to support 1080p via Component connections, which is only a problem if you have a older Xbox 360 without HDMI) as well as not supporting HDMI 1080p 24 FPS modes, only a big deal if you want the best from HD DVD or Blu-ray films, but even with those two problems, from the reviews I read they beat out models for the same sort of price from Sony and the like which were only 720p anyway.
I'm currently saving up for a new TV and am hoping to get Pioneer KURO, but that all depends on how much the price comes down, 720p models are around £1500 now where as 1080p models are £3000!
If you want to keep costs down it seems to be better to go for a higher-end 720p TV over a low-end 1080p, even more so for gaming because of the fast motion and sometimes dark areas in games.
Panasonic's 150-inch plasma would probably work well. I don't think it would be too much over kill ;)
Man this has to be one of the hardest questions to answer, I like Samsung myself tho......
I have a Sharp Aquos 37" in my bedroom for one of my 360's... and it's fantastic. Highly recommend it. Great for bright rooms. great for gaming.
My wife and 5 yr old son often use it, if I'm hogging my 360 on my 50" dlp samsung in the living room :)
(The DLP is older, I'd go with either a 50" 1080p plasma or LCD in the living room/main home theater) if I had to replace it today.

I would definitely go with a LCD - Samsungs are good - I have owned mine for over a year now and if I had to buy one today, I would go with a Full HD so that I can enjoy games in 1080p.

Like Zufoo I don't think burn-in is a problem for new Plasma TVs. However the TECH gurus I know recommend going throug 100-200 hour break in period the first time you get a new plasma TV.

Well I think I narrowed it down thanks to all of your suggestions. Based on what I've read I still think the Sharp AQUOS I linked to earlier might be a good choice.
For a Plasma I'm thinking www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx and for a DLP I'm thinking www.newegg.com/.../Product.aspx (although I'm not sure if I can actually find room for that in my tiny dorm room.) Anybody know anything about LED lighting on DLPs?

Wow! Looks like both sites are going in the right direction. Is the main problem now with online security the user/ customer service operators? I say that because of what happened with that guy who had the Halo recon armor account taken. Do you have any advice on how to protect your account better?
Lith at your first comment about plasmas that was back about five years when plasmas first came out. I raised the same concern when my dad was looking at purchasing one and the manager told me that wasn't so and I looked up the newer specs and lo and behold its true. It will last about as long as an LCD would. If your still looking samsung has some very nice TVs resonably priced.

You can't beat the mountains. I live literaly 10 miles from a little one in my city and I'm up there about once a week but the mountains out in Co just blow anything local in michigan away. Although there are some upper scale resorts near the UP like shuss and treetops.

some good advice there. Just to note the Optimizing IIS performance link does not work. I'm currently working on an online portal that is growing quickly and am trying to anticipate future problems before I hit them. I just wondered what sort of hardware your running for MS SQL? I'm currently running SQL 2005 Enterprise on a 3Ghz Xeon with 2GB, and am not sure how much longer this will hold up. I've looked at clustering but If I've understood right SQL2005 only clusters for failover and not load balancing so I dont think there would be too much to gain.
While anticipating future growth is a good idea it sounds like you're way too far ahead of yourself. If you are seeing peformance problems you'll definatley want to think about getting more RAM for your box before setting up another one and using load balancing. Make sure you have the SQL server configured to use an adequete amount of RAM as that will greatley increase the performance of the server.

Detriot metro I fly out of is really bad. Laptops need to juiced becuase TSA pulls your rear out of line to turn the thing on and make sure its not a fake or whatever. never tried a console. They usealy never give me crap about my zune or PDA though.

I think it would be better to buy a Plasma TV instead of a LCD TV because they usually have better picture quality and contrast. @Thrope89, It did take quite a while to make it by developing on and off, but the main part of it was getting the back-end ready for access by a device with limited resources.

Just installed this on my HTC Touch and it worked like a charm 1st time out the gate... Great little app for keeping up to date with Gamercards.
Love the bar charts that you used on the MN site, really sweet - hopefully one day we will see an 'official' version of the much hyped 'Live Anywhere' service, but this is great and hopefully will take off!

Hi there,
I was able to install this application on my HP iPAQ 6955 running Windows Mobile 5 (both the original download and the release you put out for 5). Both programs run with no errors but I am missing the field that appears to be for entering the gamertag and the tabs are located under my "Retrieve 'Keyboard' and Options" bar at the bottom of the screen.
Not sure if this is an issue with my display being too low RES or what, but is there anything that can be done to work around this?

That is great for consoles replaced by Microsoft. What about those who decide to purchase a new 360 whether for the HDMI port or just a different edition (Halo, Elite)? That content is tied to the old system. No love for the repeat customers?
Sucks it can't be done automatically. I will test this out on the "free" GTA theme that no longer works offline because of me using a different console.
PS - for all newly downloaded items, are they exempt from these steps as they may have the updated licensing rules? I hope you understand what I mean. :)

@Thorpe89 If I understand what you're saying correctly, no. I'm pretty sure in all circumstances you will still need to explicitly download the files to the replacement console.
@HazyCloud You are trying this on a replacement console correct? This doesn't work automatically.

@ litheon Yes this is a replacement Elite from MS. This is my 2nd Elite replcement since Apr 07. I'm honestly more concerned with my Rock Band tracks than anything else.
